Dual citizenship or multiple citizenship refers to a status in which any individual is concomitantly considered as a citizen of more than one nation. Of late, dual citizenship, or dual nationality, has evolved as the most common type of multiple citizenship. This is because of the fact that no international law prevents individuals from being citizens of two countries.

Citizens of the UK were the initiators of dual citizenship, although the French and Belgians are successfully surpassing them. The Spanish and Scandinavian citizens are next to follow as the taxation system in these nations are burdensome. Why Dual Citizenship?
The political situation in some countries is not very bright right now. Unrests are common and today, the same has been multiplied due to a sudden splurge in terrorist activities. This has resulted in severe entry and exit rules for international travelers. The problem is manifold in case of citizens of certain countries, who are finding it increasingly difficult to travel abroad. Not only they are confronted with strict visa requirements whenever they want to enter a foreign country, in some cases, entry is also belated.
Dual citizenship is the only alternative. Today, citizens of some small countries are increasingly opting for dual citizenship to avail hassle free travel. Dual citizenship is also common among international businesspersons whose field of work often entail them to travel to any particular nation.
An afterthought
A second citizenship is more than a good idea if future personal safety as well as future economic independence is the concern. However, it should be noted that not all passport programs are equivalent. There are front door passports as well as slide door passports. Front door passports are expensive and preferable but not easily gettable. Slide door passports are inexpensive and easily gettable; and are an easier alternative to front door passports, excluding the fact that the legitimacy of side door passports is not always insured. However, slide door passports have unique functionalities (depending on the nation), which can be a welcome to any holder.
